Mark E. Doherty, DMD, Massachusetts Dental Society Region 3 Trustee. Some people stumble into dentistry. Mark Doherty, DMD, was practically born into it. As a sixth-generation dentist, he says the profession is in his DNA, and from the time he was a child, he knew he wanted to follow the family tradition.
His career, however, took an unexpected turn. He entered dental school planning to become an oral surgeon, but as his education progressed, he discovered a passion for endodontics and the opportunity to help patients save their natural teeth. Today, after 20 years in practice, Dr. Doherty owns four endodontic offices, along with a portable dental practice that brings care to underserved students in nearly 300 schools across Massachusetts. One of the biggest surprises of his career is how much he values the people he has met along the way.
That appreciation for the profession led Dr. Doherty to become involved with the Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS) early in his career. Inspired by the leaders he met through the MDS, he became passionate about advocating for his colleagues and giving back to dentistry. Outside the office, friends describe him as focused, energetic, and hardworking. When he’s not seeing patients, he enjoys fitness activities like playing sports, exercising, and spending time outdoors.
